Thanks for all the responses. Next time this happens I'll do the hand-held satellite coverage checks and compare output with the main unit. Hopefully, it won't be too soon.

If you find a Garmin 128 (discontinued, so cheap) buy it, replacing the rm unit and forget the trouble. You'll never see that dreaded message again.

I also see good deals on the Furuno GP-32 now and then. I have both these units and together they cost me way less than that single RN-300 unit from RM. Both these units can also replace the RM GPS sensors like the 125 etc.
