Open cpn on raspberry pi

Hello! Happy Father’s Day! My charts on open cpn are running slow. I have separated them into chart groups but still is slow, I am using Bareboat necessities OS on a pi4 4gb. I ran a htop and it shows I’m using less then 10% of the drive. Can I do something else to speed it up and not have the screen freeze up or is there an underlying problem I have and can’t seem to find? Thank you!! John

You need BBN OS 2023-06-15 (or at least 2023-06-13) for good OpenCPN performance.
This is when it was fixed in it.

What version are you running? Did you index all ENC charts?

BBN is 6-1-21 v8 open cpn is 5.6.2

Install 2023-06-15. It will work way faster.

Do I need the OS loaded to update firmware for the pi?? It’s a 4 with 4gb

You do not need to update firmware on pi.
BBN OS is based on raspberry OS and it will do that on first boot if it’s needed.

So just burn new SD card with BBN OS and boot it.

Hello mcgrouch! I formatted the sd card and downloaded the 6/15/23 version of BBN, installed it into the pi and started it up and noticed that the date on the first screen you see was the same but the open cpn version is 5.8.4, did I do something wrong?? Thank you!!

You installed the right version.
Is it working for you?
ENC charts are fast?

I have to reload all the charts, it seemed to remember my login for signalk?

If you were logged in from browser on another computer you it could have stored it.

Hello mgrouch! I am updating BBN to newest version, can I use a windows laptop to add all of my charts, configure the MCS board then load it on sd card then install in pi? Thank you!!

It can be done but requires some advanced Linux skills to mount Linux partition from the image to your system.

You will spend a lot of time figuring that out.
