I always carry a Go and an InReach on deliveries. This is one more means that for wives, girlfriends and owners to keep track of the thing they love

In looking at the local data available to me it seems that only Class A AIS are showing up.

I have to say, this kind of non-real time AIS data seemed to me to be pretty worthless. Until…

My upcoming delivery client mentioned that his AIS was down, suddenly the ability to download all shipping traffic within 300 NM of my current location even if only once every 6 hours, seems a great tool, with limitations, of course.

For me, the professional PredictWind package has become an essential tool. But then, I am a professional!

Re: Predictwind now has satellite AIS data

Being cheap this is what I do.
I go into Marinetraffic.com and filter for fishing vessels before I start a passage.
Then I try and avoid those areas - If I can't at least I know what to expect.

Seems fishing boats aren't too big a problem in the North Atlantic, I guess they have caught all the fish

That’s fine if your “passages” last for a day or two… but I don’t consider it a passage until I have been off soundings for at least a week. By that point any data I downloaded before I left is as stale as a month old fish.

To be sure, when I am on my boat, I very much doubt that I will every be using the Predictwind AIS feature. Our realtime AIS onboard I trust a LOT more.

Re: Predictwind now has satellite AIS data

The packs in the Sopac move fairly slowly, I find it works for a few weeks. The mob off the galapagos have been in the same general area for a few months now.

Likewise the 'steamer routes' offshore the west coast of SA are pretty much fixed as far south as Valpo. Crossing traffic? Different matter. Lots of small loading ports from Guayaquil south to Mejilones /Antofagasta shipping nitrates and copper ores to the far east

For $300 you can get the Icom handheld with AIS, and see the shipping traffic in real time. I carry it on my deliveries just in case the boat AIS packs it in.

Predictwind does not tell the ships where YOU are, which class B transponders do.
