problems with Raymarine ST2000

Hello everybody.

Last week I started to have problems with my ST 2000 autopilot.
It can't mantain the boat on course with autopilot engaged.
Once you press the autopilot key, the astern start to go to starboard until the alarm start to ring. Once you checked the autopilot compass is +40 degrees from the course where the autopilot were fixed.

If I press the standby key, and engage again the autopilot. It repeats the problem, 40 more to starboard and the boat completely out of course.

It's happen in flat water, only 6 knts TWS, motoring at 4 knts.

It happen in a few seconds, just after fix the course and engage the autopilot. And always to starboard.

Does anybody have this problem?
any clue about this?

Re: problems with Raymarine ST2000

Was sailing parallel to a cliff and suddenly found myself heading straight for it. A new fluxgate compass solved the problem.

Had a similar problem years ago, fortunately no cliffs 😊

Mine was a bad fluxgate compass as well.

Repeated flux gate failures in this unit. Junk.

Re: problems with Raymarine ST2000

I have never had a compass issue with my piece of SH1TE Raymarine ST2000+
Oh and this is a newer one after the last one failed!
I have started to re engineer it,
As it’s cheaper to have better quality parts reproduced than it is to buy them.
and literally no response from Raymarine Service. They have been making this crap for 30 years but I could do better in my shed at home ( if I had one )
Bearing housing made of Effing plastic is next for re manufacturing.
Let alone the fact that the bearing is made for Radial and not linear loads. Wtf I knew this was wrong when I sat my apprentice entrance exams, i don’t think I would of got in at top set without knowing that.
Ok so the first wasn’t the best. But where is the development? Where is the improvement?
30 / 40 years and I don’t see any issues addressed!
I won’t buy another Raymarine product in my life - I would rather end up swimming

I had simiar issue with a RM autopilot a number of years ago. It is most likely the course computer for the AP. And RM won't service it, because it is too old. They will offer to sell you a new AP system for the bargain price of about $3K. Get rid of it and get something better. On my current boat, I just pulled every RM instrument off the boat and replaced it all with B&G.

Re: problems with Raymarine ST2000

I have had the cliff issue as well, if it’s always to the same side suspect compass
You should be able to hold it in free air and rotate it 360 degrees and watch the reading on the screen.
Also try and push and pull the shaft in and out, if it moves like there is some play in it then that’s a bearing housing failure ( one of the most common failures ) but parts not stocked by Raymarine!
I hear that there will soon be metal bearing housings available on Ebay to replace the crap plastic ones Raymarine have made in China.
Do RM have zero thoughts for our safety at sea?

Hi, facing exactly the same issue. How did you resolve it? (If you resolved it)
Thanks.
