Project boat

I'm in the process of resurrecting a 1983 Newport 30 mk3... she has good bones , but needs to be shown some love... which i am definitely doing. The electronics on the boat are not there anymore... now im a fishing charter captain by trade, and Ive sailed most of my life, but I don't pretend to know what im talking about when it comes to sailing electronics. Now don't get me wrong, i understand everything that is available... that is why im seeking advice... what pre-owned basics would you recommend or better yet, would you buy if you were in my position and on a limited budget?

Re: Project boat

Laptop with OpenCPN, Deph Sounder, GPS, standalone tiller Autopilot.

All wired together with NMEA 0183. NMEA 2000 might be better, but it's more expensive.

NASA Marine is making reasonably good quality electronics.
Pelagic makes reasonable priced autopilots.

Re: Project boat

This question definitely depends on what kind of sailing you are after..

For Bay Sailing/Near Coastal Day Sailing
-Compass
-Depth Sounder
-Windex
-Phone with Nav App

For weekend trips and couple weeks off at a time I would want the above plus:
-Ipad with Navionics (or equivalent) We found through trial an error that the cheap pocket cases work best to dispense heat and touch when wet.
-Wireless charger in the cockpit is convenient.
-Autopilot and or Windvane depending on your personal skill and distance goals.

For bigger passages (say: Windwards/Leewards) I would want all of the above plus:
-Windvane
-Spare autopilot (need these for light conditions and motoring)
-Laptop with OpenCPN
-Spare Ipad pre-loaded with nav software
-Sighting compass (prefer the flat one thats grey)
-Leadline for spare depth sounder (DIY is fine here)

This is of course a "Tight Budget" list. But we have sailed much of the western (twice) and north eastern Caribbean with the above (about 12k miles). To me everything else is just a convenience item.

Though I am not discounting the convenience- other things to me are not necessary for safety.
That said the most convenient weather item we ever had was the Predict Wind membership and Iridium GO. This made planning so easy.
