Puzzling Raymarine wind transducer

Got a new boat with ST60 wind display. Windspeed was OK but no directional info. I fiddled with the wires at the mast base and it seemed to work, although I could not compare it to my windex which was stuck. I did not pay much attention to whether it was working right, in retrospect,I wish I had.

In preparation for passage under a low bridge, I pulled the transducer and noted the vane portion is absent. The transducer is R28170. Figuring it was broken, I ordered a E28081 repair kit. The cups do not match, no big deal, since mine are OK, nor does the vane match online pics, but most problematic is that the vane does not have a way to attach. It appears that the whole vane mechanism is absent, no shaft etc, almost like it was never there. On top I have a smooth center hole, no threads, lip, catch, groove etc. There are also 4 slightly countersunk smooth bore blind holes. It does not look like anything was broken off or previously removed. Online pics of the R28170 show the vane. I have seen some where one of the cups have a small wing, but these seem to be symmetric.

anyone familiar with replacing the vane on this unit or if it is OK?

Re: Puzzling Raymarine wind transducer

I had the same problem with my boat. From memory I had to buy a whole new masthead transducer AND re-cable the whole thing. V expensive.

Re: Puzzling Raymarine wind transducer

Sanibel,
It appears Raymarine has changed the wind transducer since the St60 instruments came out. The new model that is compatible with the ST60+ series is R22078/79. Looks like the repair kit you ordered is for that transducer. I also have an ST60 wind instrument and my transducer looks like the one in the background of your photos.

If you have not already done so, I advise you post this issue on the Raymarine Forum. I found the technical support on this forum to respond quickly. They can confirm my conjecture and advise you on your option. I think the previous poster is correct - the only option is to replace transducer and cable.

SCHWING!!!!

Called Raymarine, they were relatively unhelpful on the phone after not responding to my email request for 1 1/2 weeks. Said I was missing pieces, send it in for $185.

Started doing more searching of the web and came across a repair manual for it, looks kind of like an internal shop manual with exploded diagrams, wiring diagrams and electronics part #'s as well as the Raymarine part # for the missing piece. At least it is a start.

The best way to get Ray's attention is on its Facebook page. The sales guys don't like unflattering posts!

The repair kit you received was for the earlier wind transducer (Raytheon and ST60) not the later ST60 and ST60+ unit.

Re: Puzzling Raymarine wind transducer

I have found Raymarine to be very responsive on their tech forums.
