Re: Question on use of an Ubiquiti Bullet 2HP

That must be some old firmware (which in the technology world could be last week's).

The advantage to WDS on the Bullet is that you only have to have one device running, don't leave your computer open to attack (which can happen with either Windows or Mac), use less power...

General rule of thumb, in WDS mode (single) you want your available wireless bandwidth to be about 4x your backhaul bandwidth. So, if you have wireless signal sufficient to get 10 MBPS you'll be able to use all of a 2.5 MBPS signal on the end connected to the internet. If you can't get 4x then you probably won't be using all of the available bandwidth at the other end. There's a lot of "depends" in there, so it's just a general rule of thumb.

Re: Question on use of an Ubiquiti Bullet 2HP

We do this all the time at our Marina (as a back up) -- We use the Bullet 2HP as a router - hooked up to an old wifi router configured as an Access point/Ethernet switch (just turn off DCHP and plug the bullet into one of the LAN ports), and selectively give the AP wifi credentials to certain neighbors ..

No real need to buy an expensive dual band router to support multiple concurrent devices as I doubt you will have the bandwidth available through the bullet anyway.

Re: Question on use of an Ubiquiti Bullet 2HP

WDS is not standardized so there is no guarantee that hardware from 2 different vendors will work together. WDS cannot be implemented on a single device. You must have access to both ends of the connection. This makes it essentially useless to a cruising boater.

+1 I've been trying to explain that but to no avail... have new hopes that you succeed with much clearer post
