Radar ethernet question

I have a Garmin XHD 18 that sends its data over ethernet, and I can view it in software like OpenCPN by connecting the ethernet cable directly to the device.

However, could I connect this device to an ethernet hub or router, with outer devices connected to it, and still receive the data from the radar, as well as the other devices?

According to this guide https://github.com/opencpn-radar-pi/...n-%28Garmin%29 it seems like it might be possible, but I'm a little hung up on the part where the ethernet port on the receiving device needs to be assigned a certain IP address, and that if I want to use the port for other uses simultaneously, I need to setup un an alias for the ethernet adaptor.

Does this mean that the Radar itself doesn't get seen my the router as a device like computers/phones/etc would? Is it just sending data blindly down the ethernet tubes?

Obviously I'm clueless on these matters and am just trying to get my feet back under me.
