Rate Compass, RC42 or Airmar

For a new B&G Zeus2 system, would you use the B&G RC42 or the Airmar H2183 rate compass? Both are similar in price.

Also, has anyone used a Vesper Marine 850 to overlay onto a Zeus2 for AIS?

Thanks.

Re: Rate Compass, RC42 or Airmar

Will this also be a B&G/Simrad autopilot? If so, the advantage of the RC42 is that it can be very easily calibrated and compensated using the B&G.

The Airmar looks to have better specs, though. I don't know what it takes to calibrate and compensate it. I think Dockhead here may have one, so he might show up with better answers.

I am keeping the Raymarine S3G AP brain and 7000 control head. The electronics geeks say it will work but not be able to be controlled by the Zeus2. It should be able to track to a waypoint.

Re: Rate Compass, RC42 or Airmar

I had an RC42 pulled apart on my workbench last night. They transmit data in your choice of nmea2000 or nmea0183. They don't require any external device for calibration. There is a calibration procedure built in that initiates if you do three 360 turns within so many seconds of powering the unit up. Well, it's actually two turns to initiate calibration and one to calibrate.
