Raymarine 4000+ wheel driven autopilot issues

We have a 1989 Catalina 30 mkII, new to us, and just got back from our first bigger trip of 3 weeks in the Gulf Islands, BC. Needless to say there were many surprises. Most I could deal with but I could do with advice on the Raymarine 4000+ Autopilot. Initially on standby the compass would always show about 150 degrees. Occasionally it would read correctly and when it did the autopilot actually worked ok under motor, would not oversteer etc. I but the compass and check, all good, I then realized if I gave the display a sharp rap it out start showing correct heading. So I pulled that unit and sure enough the ground wire from the compass to display way only a few strands and one of the other wire seemed loose. Fixed that and great the heading was perfect. Here the issue. Now in Auto the steering is all over the place. Way over steering and at each correction it oversteers more, so it gets increasingly "drunk". I tried to adjust, increase, the rudder gain, it was at 1, and any increase made it worse. The motor would also make these fast ticking sounds when at its seeming limit and the wheel would be moving in little increments (in the wrond direction). I though maybe the motor was not engaging the wheel belt with clutch engaged, so went to tighten the clutch knob screw beside the motor, it was already tight and any more turns that I gave it engaged the belt without the clutch being engaged.
I have never used a wheel autopilot before so dont really know what to listen for (ie belt slipping etc). But was hoping the community might have some ideas.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Raymarine 4000+ wheel driven autopilot issues

Catalina's have less than 2 turns, lock to lock on the wheel, AP's are default for 3 turns or more so the pilot overcorrects. I use a version of the "Catalina Cocktail" which acts reduce the amount of activity. I've found a couple versions on the Catalina 36 owners site, you may need to adjust a little. If you go into the "dealer set-up" mode the changes will be saved between uses.

Thank you so much. I never knew that about AP's. I will try that setup and see how it goes. Thanks again
