Raymarine AIS 700 GPS antenna

I’m thinking about getting the Raymarine AIS 700 unit.
I already have the standard RM gps antenna connected to my seatalk system.
Can I use that gps antenna and connect it to the AIS 700?

No. AIS must have its own GNSS antenna not a networked GNSS receiver. The AIS 700 wil come with its own dedicated puck GNSS antenna. If it isn't installed it will remain in "silent" mode (listen but not transmit your location).

Re: Raymarine AIS 700 GPS antenna

My question was can I use the old puck antenna and connect it to the AIS instead of installing the new antenna.
I understand that the AIS needs a dedicated gps antenna,
Thanks

You said you have an antenna connected to seatalk network. That wouldn't be a standalone GPS puck that is a network capable GPS receiver. No you can not use that.

"standard RM gps antenna connected to my seatalk system."

Some clarification on exactly what antenna you have (model number) would help to avoid confusion but from what you described no.

With any AIS unit that transmits, it must have its own, directly connected, GPS receiver. You could use your existing GPS receiver if you disconnect it from the Seatalk network and connect it directly to the new AIS unit. But then your network will no longer have a GPS signal. Why not just install the GPS that comes with the AIS700?

Note that the AIS700 manual specifies that only the supplied GPS unit should be connected to the AIS700.

Re: Raymarine AIS 700 GPS antenna

If you were to purchase ah em-trak B954 Class B SOTDMA AIS Transponder and if it is mounted anywhere near the top or your cabin its internal GPS will work just fine. We just installed this device in a Sabre with RayMarine electronics and it works well. We did not even run a separate VHF antenna and we are quite happy with the performance of the internal splitter.

Re: Raymarine AIS 700 GPS antenna

Thanks for the reply.
I have the Axion MFD and am using the internal GPS for the system.
The separate GPS antenna came with the ST60 instruments.
The ‘em-trac AIS looks great if not a little expensive (what isn’t).
I like the blue tooth capabilities.
I was hoping to use the old antenna as a backup.

Re: Raymarine AIS 700 GPS antenna

We went thru this with our RM AIS700. You have to use their GPS antenna. We had a hurricane claim from Harvey, and lost our GPS antenna, but the AIS was fine. It took many months to get just the antenna. I went everywhere at RM (whose support was great at the time), and everyone said "nothing else works".

We went with an AIS tuned VHF antenna from Morad. These are a big improvement over a split VHF standard antenna.
