Raymarine C120 repair advice

I have a C120w where the rubber membrane behind the malfunction knob has disintegrated. I posted this problem on the Ray company forum asking for the part number to repair it and they told me it must be sent in to replace the whole control !
When it happened last winter we were in the Bahamas. I covered it up with a piece of duct tape and it worked fine except I could not rotate the outer ring. I'm now looking for a real fix.
Has anyone else had this issue ? did you find a part number, replace the control yourself or ?? I'm thinking I could just cut an annular ring of thin rubber and glue it in place ? Any other suggestions ?

I wouldn't rely on Raymarine for any help. Crap after sales service..
