Raymarine sc 80 - axiom 9 replacement

Hi:

New member , apologies if this is repetitive.

I have a 15 yr old Raymarine SC80 and want to replace it with the Axiom 9. I also have separate ST60s etc. for depth, speed, windspeed and direction, and auto pilot. To the best of my knowledge all three run independently from the chart plotter as they function fine even if the SC80 is powered down. I have no need for these devices to be connected to the Axiom, I would like to update the chart plotter only.

Questions: 1. Can I install the new axiom as a stand alone device?
2. I realize the power cords and plugs are different, can i splice
the old power cord to the new one?
3 the new power cord also has NMEA connections - if i do not
connect them is there any harm/effect?

TIA any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: Raymarine sc 80 - axiom 9 replacement

I replaced my old Raymarine chart plotter with an Axiom 9, 2 years ago.

I purchased a Raynet to NMEA 2000 adaptor, and was able to connect to I60, and I70, as well as all the other NMEA devices on my boat no issues. (well none that Raymarine tech support didn't have an answer for).

Install the new cord. and connect to 12v through a fuse.

I bought the Raymarine NMEA 2000 adaptors, and converted most communications to NMEA.

The only things on old Raynet are autopilot, and flux compass, and I have a Raymarine to NMEA bridge so Axiom can see Autopilot rudder, and autopilot can read wind for wind steering.

You COULD use as standalone, but you lose a lot of function unnecessarily.

A $30 to $70 adaptor cable will fix all your problems and allow not only ALL your instruments to be displayed on chartplotter, but also things like speed, distance and autopilot course to be used for steering a route.

Indeed, we did the same. Little connection box did it all for us and our Element S9 (similar to Axiom) recognised it, the St60s straight way.

1. Yes
2. The Axiom has a combination power and NEMA cord. See the Axiom manual on power connections, + / - and shield wire to ground. Note you need to supply and install a 7amp inline fuse on the +12Vdc. See PDF attached.
3. No
4. Suggestion: For a small incremental cost, buy a Raymarine RAY-E22158 kit [ST1 to STNG Adaptor Kit ). With that installed, you will enable your existing Seatalk network to communicate to the Axiom via SeatalkNG ( NMEA2000). You will then be able to use more of the Axiom features you have already dearly paid for.

Re: Raymarine sc 80 - axiom 9 replacement

Thank you so much for your guidance and assistance. I most certainly will do the upgrade and buy the cable to patch the other devices in.

Fair winds.

You can use ITC-5 to convert all old sensor to the N2K with ST-NG connector.

I'm running Axiom 7 with new Raymarine Autopilot Evo - works great. I left my water speed, depth, temp connected directly to the old instrument display. Once I add wind instrument, I will convert all signals to N2K. That's the way to go.
