Receiving AIS data with an Iridium Go

Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to receive AIS data with an Iridium Go? Similar to the way you download a GRIB file for predict wind it would be nice if you could download a compact file of AIS traffic overlayed with your position.

I have a chart plotter with an AIS receiver but find myself using Navionics on a tablet much more frequently and don't really want to fork out for a Wifi receiver so I can get AIS traffic on Navionics.

Thanks.

Short answer: No. It is not practical to do as you wish.

Even if you COULD do it, you might not really want to. Internet AIS really should NOT be used for navigation and collision avoidance. Updates can be delayed by very unpredictable amounts.

Smarter move is buying a Vesper XB-8000 with WiFi. It will stream AIS, ships data and GPS location to the tablet. Streaming GPS enables you to turn off the GPS chip in the tablet, making the battery last longer.
