Perhaps that is just as difficult as sending in the radio.
As it turns out -- I had no idea -- you actually CAN transfer the MMSI in the UK. That is because the UK -- I didn't realize this -- is still not transferring the MMSI numbers to ITU. The rules are still in flux, and DSC handhelds appear to still be illegal in most of Europe.

I just read my license, and it is not valid outside of UK waters! AND they can make me change my MMSI, when uniform rules are adopted!

All of this applies only to handhelds. Fixed radios get official ITU MMSI numbers which follow the ship from owner to owner.

Re: Reprogramming MMSI in Standard Horizon HX851?

In Canada you can modify you MMSI info online, changes in boat, ownership changes, name and addresse changes etc.
Also in Canada you fill out the Annex I form for a hand held number if it is NOT associated with a particular boat.
Fill out Annex A for a typical pleasure craft MMSI number. Same form to make changes.
Couldn't find anything about the number staying with you or the boat, fom the changes you are able to make I don't think it makes any difference, up to you it seems.
Don't know about the States, never going there again, never looked into it.

My details showed up on the ITU site within a week or so I think.

Maybe I misunderstand your meaning?

I think that is correct in that it has to go back to SH, have you tried to contact them.

Re: Reprogramming MMSI in Standard Horizon HX851?

Simple, wasn't about to pay taxes in a country I only lived in for a few months, never worked in..... been in Canada my whole life so I got rid of my US citizenship.
Can't go back and I don't care! One of only two countiries who attemp this kind of tax bs.
Was unfortunatly born there when my dad was doing a placement for his PhD.
There have been a large number of us who have done the same thing who had dual. Not paying income tax twice when I made no income in one country ever!
Cost me a lot of money and they don't want me back ever.
I don't dislike Americans but I sure can't stand my ex country anymore.
Too bad because I thought I might move back again one day, then I found out about the taxation.

Re: Reprogramming MMSI in Standard Horizon HX851?

Don't all tax authorities always favour the easy option of bullying private citizens?

Gov't tax accountants will have been at the bottom of their classes.
Big companies pay megabucks to the accountants who came top of theirs.

Try to bully big companies and the tax man would have his arse handed to him in court before "retiring to spend more time with his family."

Case in point UK gov't, Google, Facebook etc. "negotiations."

Yeah, right. We get tax assessments, they get "pretty please."

I'm talking about HANDHELDS -- the ship's normal MMSI gets registered in the ITU database immediately. There is no international rule for issuing MMSIs for handhelds, and you can't use the same MMSI in the handheld. So Ofcom in the UK is issuing its own MMSI's for HANDHELDS which do not go to ITU.

Your Ship Portable Radio License is NOT valid outside of UK territorial waters.

Re: Reprogramming MMSI in Standard Horizon HX851?

Dockhead,
your last post with the reference to UK regs is interesting. For UK then one does not need to change the MMSI number when selling a HT but have the database changed.

Off hand do you know what authority(s) covers the Caribbean or is it a patchwork of different regulations?
