Round object on B&G Chart Plotter

I was sailing up to the San Juan Islands and had this object appear on the chart. I passed within a half mile of it and can definitely say that there was no planet shaped object there! I've gone thru the manual, but this does not appear it it.

The object is round, about the size of a dime and stays in it's position on the chart - ie. as I sailed beyond it slowly passed astern and eventually off the chart. It also stayed in position as I zoom in/out of the chart.

Does anyone know what this is?

Re: Round object on B&G Chart Plotter

I can't find where you are looking at the NOAA vector charts. What are the coordinates of the object? Does it show up on other charts or plotters/computers?

I have C-Map charts on my Zeus3 on the boat but won't be there until probably Monday.

Cheers,

Did you try tapping it for a pop up of info or a photo?

Drag out the paper chart and see if it is there.

That be were the Kraken lies in wait. It remained underwater so you could not see it when you sailed by. You were fortunate it did not awaken and head towards you as you sojourned nearby.

That's a bit fanciful isn't it? More likely it's a wormhole to an earth-like planet in another galaxy. Either way it's best to keep clear ... ...

I believe an AIS MOB distress beacon transmits a signal which shows up on a chart plotter as a red circle with a red cross inside it, but if you put the cursor on it you will see a distress message & GPS position. Did you put the cursor on this symbol you saw?

The object is at N 48 14.989 W122 52.122. It is not on any paper charts I've seen. It is definitely not a MOB icon - that looks very different.

Hard to see, but is it identifying a hazard? Like a shoal where waves may break?

Re: Round object on B&G Chart Plotter

I didn’t find anything on my Navionics app or Google Earth; could it just be a waypoint that was saved with a personalized icon? (I don’t have CMaps, sorry in advance if it is a silly question)

You guys don’t see it’s a fish? Must be fishing grounds or fishfinder hit.

Re: Round object on B&G Chart Plotter

I believe I've found it. It is visible on my B&G Zeus2, but only if I select the in-built Insight map set. It's not visible with my C-Map mapset (east coast) or Navionics. It's also not visible if I use my Android C-Map app.

When I press the Info softkey it shows "Smith and Minor Island Aquatic Reserve (Water.MarineProtecxtedAreas)"

The symbol is clearly a porpoise relaxing on a floating pillow. Fish? Heck no, that's an insult.
