Seatalk legacy comns with nema2000 gear

Hi
Im investigating slowly upgrading my c130 Raymarine system for a newer chartplotter (favouring B & G Zeus)
Questions, is it possible to retain the old depth sounder, AIS, wind, speed instruments for now. The autopilot Ill keep separate either way.
Ive looked at the Digital yacht products and in principal it looks like a ‘work around’ solution?
Anybody had experience with this or similar solutions?

These converters from Raymarine work well.

Re: Seatalk legacy comns with nema2000 gear

Another vote for the RayMarine converter - they do an excellent job of converting Seatalk (the original) - like for ST60 instruments to SeatalkNG (NMEA2000 with RayMarine connectors).
I had one on Atsa for 7 years, and the processor inside locked up about once a year - a power cycle restored it. I don't know if this was caused by some aspect of my installation, or if its a generic problem. Ours was on 24/7/365, so once a year is a pretty small error rate

Edit to add: The converter is two-way - so info from the N2K system is also passed to the older network - so stuff like SOG from the chartplotter/GPS gets passed to the older instrument for display.

Why get new transducers if yours are working?

I will have to retain the Depth and wind display somewhere as the transducer wires connect directly to the displays. Then, the information is sent along the Seatalk network which can easily connect to NMEA 2000.

We are using the YachtDevices YDNR-02 to convert SeaTalk and 0183 data to NMEA 2000.

Really easy to install and works great.

I also have the Yacht Devices YDNR.

I got it so that I could get my instruments and AIS on a wifi connection. Lots to like about that. I have tried it with AquaMaps and iNavex on an iPhone and AquaMaps, iNavex and OpenCPN on android.

I had a tiny glitch but it ended up being an iPhone setting. AquaMaps support staff is very responsive.

Re: Seatalk legacy comns with nema2000 gear

The Yacht Devices YDNR sounds very interesting but can only speak for the Raymarine converter. I also have old RM ST60 speed and depth and with the adapter can see that info on my Garmin plotter in the cockpit and the B&G data display at the nav table.

Slightly tricking installation. The Seatalk cable plugs into the adapter. The adapter then has to be at the end of the NMEA2000 backbone cable, replacing the terminator on that end with the one on the RM adapter.

Since RM uses a proprietary connector you have to buy or make a RM to Devicenet (the common type of connector) cable to go from the NMEA backbone to the RM adapter.

Once I did that it was mostly plug and play.

Skip,

The YDNR is similar in that you need a NEMA 2000 stub (for power?) even if nothing on the NEMA 2000 network.

I have Raymarine ST-60 wind, and depth, and boat speed on Sea Talk.
I have an Icom MA-500TR AIS on NEMA-0183.

Thanks for that. Since I already have the RM adapter to bring my ST60 data onto the network I'm wondering what additional benefits the YDNR might bring?

Probably not enough to put it high up on the long list of stuff to do on the boat.

Only if you want a wifi connection.

I got it because my plotter would no longer show AIS data. It was the cheapest easiest way to put AIS on my phone.
