SeatalkNG to Opencpn (ver 5.8)

I need advice on which adaptors are supported to interface STNG to OpenCpn(5.8)
I want to interface to Pc RS232 (not Usb).

Is there a list of Opencpn supported STNG/N2K messages?

Re: SeatalkNG to Opencpn (ver 5.8)

You would be better served posting this question on the OpenCPN forum.Nonetheless, some of us also lurk on this electronics forum.

For direct connection to Setalk NG/NMEA 2000 networks, OpenCPN 5.8.x supports the following adapters on all platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • Actisense NGT-1
  • Yacht Devices YDNU-02
Additionally on Linux, any CAN Bus adapter that implements the SocketCAN interface is also supported.

None of the tested/supported adapters support RS232, they are all either USB or connect directly to the GPIO/I2C/SPI interfaces on boards such as the Raspberry Pi.

Similarly the TwoCan plugin only supports the following adapters on Windows & Mac
  • Kvaser Leaflight
  • Canable Cantact
  • Rusoku Toucan
  • Axiomtek AX92903
and on Linux, any Can Bus adapter that implements the SocketCAN interface.

Again, none of these connect via RS232.

There are a few RS232 to CAN Bus converters advertised on Amazon/AliExpress, however I have no idea whether they support the SocketCAN interface on Linux. They certainly would not be supported on Windows or Mac today with OpenCPN 5.8.x, nor by the TwoCan plugin.

Off the top of my head, OpenCPN supports the following PGN's
  • 60928 (for the address claim dance)
  • 126996, NMEA Product Information (I think it may support this)
  • 128259, Speed (although this may only be implemented in the Dashboard)
  • 128267, Depth (although this may only be implemented in the Dashboard)
  • 129025, Position (Rapid Update)
  • 129026, COG/SOG (Rapid Update)
  • 129029, GNSS Position
  • 129540, GNSS Satellite Data (although this may only be implemented in the Dashboard)
  • 129038, AIS Class A Position Report
  • 129040, AIS Class B Position Report
  • 129041, AIS AToN
  • 129793, AIS Date & Time Report
  • 129794, AIS Class A Static Data & Voyage Report
  • 129798, AIS SAR Position Report
  • 129809, AIS Class B Static Data Report, Part A
  • 129810, AIS Class B Static Data Report, Part B
  • 130306, Wind (although this may only be implemented in the Dashboard)
  • 130312, Temperature (although this may only be implemented in the Dashboard)

I guess the fundamental question is what Operating System are you using and why do you want to connect via RS232 ? I'm guessing you have an old PC or industrial/single board/mini-ATX computer that has RS232 ports.

If you really need to connect the Seatalk NG/NMEA 2000 network via RS232, your best option might be one of the gateways (ShipModul, Yacht Devices, Actisense etc) that have an RS232 connection.

Re: SeatalkNG to Opencpn (ver 5.8)

There is now an updated section for NMEA 2000 in the OpenCPN 5.8.x User Manual which includes a reference to the Pican-M

I also use one, they're a good CAN hat, support SocketCAN so are supported by SignalK, OpenCPN 5.8.x and the OpenCPN plugin TwoCan.

I especially like that they have a Micro-C socket and power supply so that it is easy to connect to the NMEA 2000 network and the Pi can be powered from the NMEA 2000 network.

Re: SeatalkNG to Opencpn (ver 5.8)

Hi All
Great with the NMEA2000 update to the User Manual. Thx

Can one assume that the NGT-1 ISO will work as well.
I am using a laptop and a 4 Serial ports to USB adaptor.
Have used this setup for nmea183 I/O to Opencpn.

The NGT-1 ISO is a NGT-1 with optically isolated I/O.

You are aware that it connects to your PC via USB? You were originally interested in devices that connected via a serial port.

Re: SeatalkNG to Opencpn (ver 5.8)

Thx Stevead

According to Actisense:
-USB version is fully isolated to prevent dangerous ground loops
-ISO version has OPTO-isolated input and ISO-Drive[emoji769] output for safely interfacing with RS232 or RS422

Manual states that ISO version is fully compatible with Rs232/422

I stand corrected. That's what happens when one doesn't read the manual !

I guess this is the unit that meets your requirements.
