SH RAM 4 wireless mic

Recently got a new Standard Horizion radio with a wireless mic set up. To use it you connect an Access Point the radio and that creates a wireless connection between the radio and mic. I was a bit surprised that the AP gets moderately warm, not hot, but you can feel the warmth.

SH advertises 60’ range. I have a steel boat so I got the extension cable and the AP is mounted on the coaming under the dodger. The mic is in the cockpit, about 8’ from the AP. Yet the mic will occasionally, far too frequently, disconnect from the AP.

8’ with nothing in the way, full charge, and the disconnect alarm m goes off maybe every 15 minutes or half hour.

I have not reached out to SH yet, I wanted to see what folks here had to say first. If this is normal, that is one thing, if not then something else. Also I am down in the Caribbean moving around so it is no easy thing to return for warranty baloney. If it is a bad mic more than likely I would just buy a second and bring it down next season and save the aggregation.

Thanks

Oh man, don’t do the wireless mikes. Just get the wired version, I hope you can return this one.

Re: SH RAM 4 wireless mic

Jedi,

I have had the wired mics and have had difficulties. I can explain but won’t unless asked.

Do you have some more specific objection to wireless?

Other than the annoying alarm and some delay between the mic and radio audio it seems fine.

In any case it is a done deal, the short range was annoying.

There is not a single wireless mike solution that has acceptable performance. You give two huge reasons against it and then still concludes it is fine which flabbergasted me Do you realize what happens when you try to talk through the remote during alarms and that using it multiplies alarms?

They are all unacceptable. For wireless, use a good handheld. These systems must be rock solid, zero tolerance to flaws.
