Skype setup

Hi, I'm trying to find out if I can setup a Skype connection from my boat in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia, to a yacht in Honolulu. Can anyone tell me how I would go about setting that up using my onboard computer (high end Dell, Windows 7, IE9)? The party on the other end has a similar computer setup. Thank you.

Re: Skype setup

Download Skype. Pay for phone service or do video chat for free. You need an internet connection. Add person to contact list and call them....

At first I was wondering if you were serious, then I realized if you haven't used the service you wouldn't necessarily know how dead easy it is. It is no more complex than chatting online.

Re: Skype setup

You'll need an internet connection for your computer, then go here:

https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form

fill out the form to create a Skype account for yourself. When you get to the end it should download and install the Skype application automatically. If it doesn't, go here:

Downloading

Re: Skype setup

If you both open Skype accounts and have internet service, you can talk for free. A USB headset works best, but the built in mike and speakers on most laptops works fine. There is no charge to open an account, only to call phones.

Re: Skype setup

Lee Woods - It helps to be prepared prior to installing the Skype application. You will need to be prepared to list a Skype Name as it will appear in other user's Contact Lists. I just use my name with middle initial, all lower case with no spaces, but you can use anything that you like. You will also need to list a User ID and a Password. I strongly suggest using something that you use for other non-critical online applications that you can remember. It is also a good idea to keep a record of these items as you can set Skype up where it will log you on automatically when you turn the computer on, negating the need to use these items frequently, making them even harder to remember. Just go to www.skype.com and get started. Just remembered, you can put as little as $10 of credit on account with Skype to use a feature called Skype Out which permits you to call telephones from your computer for as little as 2 cents a minute depending on the country, a great feature. Computer to computer is free. Best of luck!

If you have a smart phone (droid or apple) you can get the free app from the respective app store. But this use the data from your phone plan or you can switch your phone to wifi if one is in range and prevent the data usage.

Good luck!

If you can find your way to this forum, you can find your way to Skype.
