IMHO it would be especially useful for cruising and diving on the northern reaches of Lake Superior, Isle Royale and the Canadian north shore. The Iridium satphone which I have use seems like overkill. Plus I never expend the minutes.

It will be interesting to see if these guys can pull it off.

They use Iridium, and it looks like the Iridium 9602 Short Data Burst modem will just fit inside the case. This does text messaging only, and apparently only using the "Bivy" app on your smartphone. I am asking them if there is an external antenna jack.
