Re: So, how many GPS's gave you got?

Let me see…
  • Garmin 76 handheld
  • Garmin 721 multi display
  • iPad
  • DSC (AIS) VHF radio
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 3G
  • Old Garmin 76 handheld
So only seven.

Re: So, how many GPS's gave you got?

I don't sail offshore. Day sails or day long trips to another marina or anchorage. I voted as 3 then remembered the old Garmin handheld in the ditch bag. Otherwise it's chart plotter, vhf with gps, and Android phone.
I don't think any of us are getting lost.

Re: So, how many GPS's gave you got?

I listed six at first:
Chart plotter
SH GX 2200 base VHF
SH HX850 handheld VHF
SH HX870 handheld VHF
Elderly Magellen 315 handheld GPS
Even more elderly Magellan Pioneer (the last two are devoted to the ditch bag)

Then I realized I wasn't adding properly.

I have two "puck" receivers for my OpenCPN netbook that of course make it into a GPS.

I have a retired but functional Raymarine 420 monochrome plotter and a GPS mount I could hook back up quickly.

Lastly, I have a Suunto Ambit 2.5 wrist-top computer equipped with GPS. Plus an old Windows phone (disabled because of my sad data plan) I could activate.

Did I mention my lead line, hand-bearing compass and sextants?

Re: So, how many GPS's gave you got?

I was thinking in terms of GPS devices I could actually use for navigation:

Plotter (Furuno with C-map)
iPad min with Garmin Bluecharts (with LifeProof waterproof case)
Samsung Galaxy with iNavionics

My preference for usability is the iPad. After I had some strange behavior from the iPad on my trip back from the Bahamas (no biggee - it resolved itself), I thought about adding another iPad. But how is it that so many people have "second plotters"? Where do you put the second plotter?

Fyi, while the iPad acted funky once or twice, I have also had the Furuno give me the "blackbox error" on three separate occasions and shut itself down - luckily that never happened at a crucial moment, but I now habitually have both Furuno and iPad running in any slightly demanding navigation situation. Crossing the Gulf Stream on the other hand, I turn on the iPad maybe once every 30 minutes just to check course.

OK, I'll bite....And people wonder why celestial navigation is dying off.

Yeah, you could have an EMP go off next to your boat or a rouge nation shoot the satellites out of the sky but reasonably, you can expect to have a GPS available or have bigger problems to deal with.

I have a matching pair of Garmin etrex yellow (very old). I suppose the gps in my phone counts too. So 3...and I don't even own a boat right now!

You better have more than one. My GPS lied to me to the tune of a 40nm difference in latitude. Had to dig out my old lat/long GPS to find where I actually was.

If all the GPS satellites get shot out of the sky, it may be better to stay at sea till the dust settles.

Re: So, how many GPS's gave you got?

LOL GPS are built into so many things that I have no idea how many I have. I stopped the count at 11 but.... I can tell you that I only have three (3) "on purpose" GPS that were purchased for the express purpose of being a GPS and providing lat/long/navigation information.

1. GPS built into Airmar Weatherstation 2008
2. GPS (also Airmar) purchased when radar/B&G chartplotter installed 2014
3. Hockey puck type USB GPS for a computer 2010.

The rest, well they're just happen along GPS

It looks like Kenomac is the ultimate consumer here at 15.

There is no one with zero, but there must surely be a few escaping the modern world.

Strange to think I paid in today's money several thousand $s for my first one and now they are as cheap as chips.
