Sonar Depth Sounder?

I'm new to Cruiser Forum - so hello
We are looking at a new depth sounder on our long keel displacement ketch and have come across info. about Sonar sounders, particularly the Interpahse range. Has anyone out there had any experience with these or any other brand ?
Thanks and safe sailing

I think you may be confusing yourself with terminology. Sonar, (at least the stuff we normal boaters use), is the same as a Sounder. Are you asking about the Interphase forward looking unit? or just a normal depth indicator/bottom display of some sort?

Although forward-looking sonar (FLS) units, such as manufactured by Interphase and EchoPilot, can offer some utility, I suspect they represent a lower “value” (utility vs cost ratio).

In addition to Interphase and EchoPilot, FarSounder recently attempted the crossover to the recreational market. Furuno, Simrad and Si-tex make “searchlight” sonar, which displays an image around your boat. Only Furuno and Si-tex have searchlight units aimed at the recreational market though. Humminbird produces a “side-scan” unit for the recreational market.
