Ours gets strapped to a handrail under the dodger. It uses GPS says so it needs a clear view of the sky.

Whenever I'm solo sailing, I keep my Spot strapped to my arm, or in a zipped pocket. You never know when some freak occurrence will leave you in the water watching your boat sail off. Highly unlikely, but the Spot is cheap insurance.
