Don't mean to hijack, but why don't any of these companies offer the tracking features for an iPhone (or other) app? The devices have GPS capability!

GPS is one-way, just like your car stereo.

Actually, you are. ;-)

And why would you?

If the two people are within range of a mobile phone network, why would they discuss a satellite based device? Eh? Eh, eh? Eh, eh, eh ???

So, yes. You are trying to hijack. God only knows why.

No penalty for this though. More ideas, more hopes of finding a good solution. Noise IS relevant.

And, darling, btw, it does not need to be an iPhone. Much as you might be completely puzzled by this. ;-)

Cheers,
barnakiel

Not sure. But you did make me look into the mirror and reconsider my raw manners.

All the newer devices offer bluetooth access to their functions. So you can text both ways as well as control some of the functions by just tapping on your mobile device of choice. In this respect, the devices have the functionality you want.

I think if Galileo EVER picks up, we may see tracking / texting / sos deployed from our mobile toys too. For unlike GPS, BEIDOU and GLONASS, Galileo does mention 2-way msg capacity.

Another possibility is to get what you want as soon as Elon has all his constellation ready.

I bet he will bet on smartphones rather than on any dedicated devices.

Respectfully,
barnakiel
