ST 60 Humming Noise

Hey folks,

The strong summer fl storms have left my st60 wind instrument humming and I do not mean a tune! I get power, but no data is displayed and the the other instruments connected to it all work fine. Before I pay $200 to raymarine for repair, I am looking for suggestions.

Of course is it worth spending $200 for repair or spend x3 to go wireless???

thanks!

Check the cables and connectors.

Otherwise, consult Raymarine Tech Help, or:

When you say other instruments, do you mean that other devices, like say an ST-60+ Graphic, can receive and display NMEA/SeaTalk wind data? In either case, it appears the ST-60 Wind instrument - or the masthead unit - is malfunctioning. If the other devices receive wind data, then the ST-60's display is bad. If not, then probably the whole unit is bad, and it's only relaying power thru its SeaTalk cable power lead (red wire). If the unit displays 0 knots (or 0 degrees), then it could be the masthead unit, or the input circuitry the masthead unit wiring connects to.

What is humming, the display head or the masthead transducer? If the masthead, the bearing for the cup spindle may be wasted--particularly if there was a nearby lightening strike.

The additional unit that is working fine is the tridata, the close hauled is getting power but does not hum [a tune].

The humming noise is coming from the st60 control head and there was a very nearby hit - one of those you duck for (like that would do a lot of good!).

thanks for all the replies, keep 'em coming!
