Starlink

Just wondering if anyone has installed a Starlink system on their boat and is willing to share their experience with it? It looks like there are systems being used on land, but the impact this will have on the marine electronics industry will be profound once the network of satellites are fully deployed

Re: Starlink

Currently, they are just now applying for permission that will allow you to be at all mobile. They still have not developed a receiver designed for mobile applications.

Re: Starlink

Starlink service is based on cells that appear to be somewhere around 15-60 miles across. Your receiver is tied to that cell, it would appear (and there have been successful reports) that you can roam within that cell, albeit not within the terms of the current FCC license in the US.

Quote:
Your Starlink is assigned to a single cell. If you move your Starlink outside of its assigned cell, a satellite will not be scheduled to serve your Starlink and you will not receive internet. This is constrained by geometry and is not arbitrary geofencing.
About 6 weeks ago Starlink did apply to the FCC for mobile licenses for US clients:

https://fcc.report/IBFS/SES-LIC-INTR...34/3877177.pdf

One interesting note in that filing:

Quote:
SpaceX Services will ensure installation of ESIM terminals on vehicles and vessels by qualified installers who have an understanding of the antenna's radiation environment and the measures best suited to maximize protection of the general public and persons operating the vehicle and equipment. An ESIM terminal exhibiting radiation exposure levels exceeding 1.0 mW/cm in accessible areas, such as at the exterior surface of the radome, will have a label attached to the surface of the terminal warning about the radiation hazard and will include thereon a diagram showing the regions around the terminal where the radiation levels could exceed the maximum radiation exposure limit specified in 47 C.F.R. § 1.1310 Table 1.9

Re: Starlink

Have a quick site search, there are already a few threads on Starlink open.

Not sure we need one more.

Just saying, the subject is definitely interesting....

Re: Starlink

I could not find any dedicated threads to Starlink and no one who has actually mounted one to a boat yet. This is likely due to some of the issues stated in this thread which I think is valuable.

Re: Starlink

Ya but do you know how many "What boat should I buy?" or "Whats the best anchor?" Starlink pales in comparison.
