Re: Stupidest “What is it?” Ever

The Wife has been trying to het me to reduce the capacity of my refabulator as it tends to discharge, over night, under the sheets.

She suggested I get it rebuilt and upgraded into a confabulator, seems it would be a better match for my memory.

Re: Stupidest “What is it?” Ever

I have a WiriePro wifi extender. This model had the capability of also communicating on cellular. You buy q sim card and then it would make a cell (data only) connection and repeat it over the boats wifi.

I never used that feature and totally forgot about it. This appears ro be a higher gain cell antenna I bought but never installed.

MYSTERY SOLVED.

Thanks to one and all.

Re: Stupidest “What is it?” Ever

Glad the mystery was solved.

But I just want to get one thing clarified. The OP stated the connector wasn't a PL-259, but smaller. Someone suggested N-type, but N connectors are the same barrel size as a PL-259. And the connector does not appear to be a BNC, that is smaller but the uses a bayonet type connection. So I guess that leaves TNC connector. SMA are too small also.

Again, great you solved the mystery. B-Z

Re: Stupidest “What is it?” Ever

Yes, appears to be a TNC connector. SORT of mid sized. Not BNC. Not SMA. Screw on not bayonet. Bigger than a type F.

My Cell bi-directional amp has SMA on the inside connection and type F on the outside, neither fit this antenna.

Damn it, need to get out the miccrometer.

Yup TNC.

It is difficult for me to keep all the acronyms in my head.

Looks like an old Satnav antenna to me. I guess that dates me.

The antenna looks like our former satellite radio antenna but the coax suggests more like for an Iridium Go. Our Go had a small external antenna that we ended up not using. It didn't look like that but the general size is similar.

Re: Stupidest “What is it?” Ever

It's an active antenna, and has a built-in preamplifier, so has to have 12v DC fed up the coax, from a small injector box, called a 'Bias Tee.' That may be why it has an unusual connector. It will have terminals or a connector for DC and one to antenna and another to the receiver. Do not connect it to a transmitter, as that will terminally damage the preamp.
I have one for my Nasa Navtex, and another for broadband HF ( 100 kHz to 30 MHz.(i am a radio amateur). Could be for wefax, or just general listening.

If it is not connected and you don't know what is. It's a deep six candidate.

Sacrilege

Wrap it carefully in grease proof brown paper, then tie with string and place in an unused area of the bilge.

The next owner will spend hours wondering what it is and why it was carefully wrapped up.

Of course this might be how the OP found it

Yup, exactly. Because bought it, forgot about it, total self inflicted wound.

Re: Stupidest “What is it?” Ever

If it's a cell phone antennae then if presumably mast mounted, it would need a cable of appropriate length. However, I think Jim was onto something. I have a few of those things in my electronics cable bin as well, but my refabulators are all left handed and I worked that out using induction, so they are not capacative versions either. My spouse "recoiled" at this observation. After AMPle consideration that's our current thoughts. Here to help. I understand Jim may be in lockdown at the moment and like me has little else to do.

LMR-200 coax

No markings of any kind.

Damn brain fart!!!
The connector is a TNC - similar to a BNC, but screw (like a PL259) rather than bayonet. Now you need to find something on board with a TNC socket .......

It looks like the stubby aerial for the Garmin 45.
