testing sat phone

Looking into used sat phones.
Is it possible to test them without putting a sim card in?
In other words: ihow do I know whether it is still in working order?

I bought two 2nd hand iridiums using eBay sight unseen there's no easy to prove they work. Without a SIM card they will power up but not do anything else

I had the same problem wanting to test mine a a month or more before we left on a two-month trip. Didn't want to start the clock ticking on my prepaid time. I wish Iridium would clue in to this frequent problem and sell a 3- or 5-minute "test" block.
