Upgrade autopilot?

I currently have a Simrad AP24 from 2011. Is there any discernible benefit for an offshore cruiser in upgrading to a more modern solution with, for example, a 9 axis sensor, more modern computer etc?

Interested in this, as I’m looking for a backup AP system. Currently have a Simrad HLD-350 hydraulic ram, AC42 computer, AP24 and Zeus2 control. I’m looking at the NAC-3 and Ram-T2, but like you have no clue what has been improved, if anything. Simrad subs out a lot of their hardware (or all of it?). I have had some bad hardware like the RC42 rate compass that failed. Maybe they only have improved reliability? I’ve seen others swear that Raymarine is hands-down better at APs. Wondering.

Software version 1.1.02.00 for NAC2 and NAC3 Autopilot Computers has the following:

• Support flow switch for SteadySteer function, to automatically override the autopilot when manually turning the wheel.
• The alarm “No active autopilot controller” should not be triggered when the autopilot is in STBY mode or when autopilot is powered up.
• Auto/standby button should not work with other autopilots like Ghost (trolling motor).

The NAC-3 drops support for the AP24 control head. It supports the newer, color display AP44 instead.

If you intend to keep your AC42 as a backup unit, the AC42 works with both the AP24 and the AP44.

Another gotcha: Zeus 2 MFDs will not allow Wind Nav mode with the NAC-2/NAC-3 autopilot computers.
