Upgrade old yachtspot router to 4G

I have a yachtspot router and external wifi antenna (on spreader) that was installed new in 2009 for PO. I presume this is for improved wifi connectivity to shore networks. I’m looking to resurrect this system but also I’m wanting to improve my range for receiving the cellular network while sailing coastal in NZ. I read in an April 2014 yachting world article that an upgrade is possible.

“Yachtspot upgrades
For those with older Yachtspot units that only offer connections to wi-fi networks, it is often possible to upgrade the firmware and then connect a 4G router such as the Huawei E5172s-22 LTE 4G Router (£179) which will allow the unit to connect to 2G, 3G and 4G networks as well as maintaining the onshore wi-fi capability.“

I’m wondering if this approach uses the same antenna or is simply connecting a below decks cell antenna into the system. Clearly the latter would not have the desired effect.

I’m also wondering if this is the latest thinking.

I work from the boat a fair bit and would like to maximise my cell reception.

Phil

No, I didn't. In the end I mounted a separate antenna.
