Re: US Coast Guard AIS data validation service

Thanks Capt Pat

Do you have any idea if I transmit for just a while (eg. 30 min), if the data is captured and then entered into a 'batch' refresh job only once every 24 hours?

Re: US Coast Guard AIS data validation service

You shouldn't have to transmit long - just long enough to get out one or two static details messages. In a congested area that could take a little while (tens of minutes). It can take half a day or so to show up.

VIVS is updated twice a day, 365 days a year.

Re: US Coast Guard AIS data validation service

For reference, here is the Coast Guard's AIS configuration guide: https://navcen.uscg.gov/pdf/AIS/AISGuide.pdf

Much of the guide pertains to Class A transponder configuration items, but the configuration items that appear on Class B units is pertinent.

The statement on that guide: "Note, Class B devices in the U.S. can only be encoded by the vendor or manufacturer’s agent" is of disputable accuracy, especially since the manufacturer provides software and instructions for user configuration. Just be very careful, especially when setting the MMSI.

I’d rather do it right. You are assuming the installer knows what he is doing. From looking at the “pro” installs and data setup on the boats around me I can see that it’s easy to do a better job if you do your own homework, at least in my area.

Re: US Coast Guard AIS data validation service

Not rocket science to do it , basic numbers input and plenty of Software to help along, but if you do get it wrong its a send back to the Manufacture who will charge you for re setting it , so no drinky Drinkys when putting in your number

Re: US Coast Guard AIS data validation service

When I bought my first AIS many years ago I gave my MMSI number to the vendor. He plugged that in to the unit and the unit came with a CD to do the rest of the programming. Very easy to do. But the unit would not let me plug in my own MMSI number. It had to be done by the vendor. The reason for that is so you cannot change the MMSI number after it is programmed in.
