USCG Safety Alert: Ship AIS blocked whenever VHF radio is keyed

The US Coast Guard just released a Marine Safety Alert advising that AIS onboard a vessel will be blocked while the ship's VHF radiotelephone is being keyed, regardless of how the antennas of the two devices are installed. AIS can be blocked by VHF radios being keyed from nearby vessels as distant as 136m. Blocking is not new and would be barely noticed since the AIS display would be updated once the VHF stops transmitting. Yet it may be a problem if AIS were being relied upon for collision avoidance.

That seems to fit in that category of advisory of "don't be a dumbass glued to your screens". Good reminder to look outside the boat.
