Used Icom 701

Hello,

I am preparing my boat to head south from the U.S. when I retire in two years. With that, I'd like to add SSB to the boat, but am on a limited budget.

I have seen a used (bench tested) Icom 701 for sale with a tuner at a price I can afford.

Since I know little to nothing about SSB's, can someone with knowledge of the SSB world give me advice on whether this would be a feasible solution?

Gary

Re: Used Icom 701

Gary,
If the radio you're looking at is really an "icom 701" (Icom IC-701), then do NOT buy this radio....it is an old (1979 thru 1983) Icom ham radio, with some rather odd peculiarities, and some known age-related issues...(note that Icom ham radios have the "IC" prefixes in their model names/numbers)

If the radio you're looking at is an Icom M-710 (this is Icom marine HF transceiver, note Icom marine radios have "M" prefixes in their model numbers)...
This is an older (1990's / early 2000's) non-DSC marine HF radio, and in good condition, is still useable for many purposes...

Which radio are you looking at???
Which tuner comes with it??? (AT-130 ???)
What price?? ($400 to $700?? including tuner??)
What condition? Where is it from? Who used it last? Do you absolutely trust the seller? Can you test it out (on-the-air) yourself, before you buy it?
etc. etc.??

Re: Used Icom 701

Hi Gary,

I just pulled an ICOM IC_M802 with AT-140 automatic antenna tuner out of my recently purchased boat. I was listening to it this morning. I would sell the lot for $800.
