Vesper watchmate 850

Just a question about our Vesper watchmate 850, it's always been the same but it seems to me that the anchor watch display is always showing 180 degrees out, I've tried all sorts of settings but the anchor watch display never changes its orientation, its not a good picture but our boat is showing ahead of the anchor and not behind it, if you know what I mean, do we need to have a heading sensor fitted? or am I just not using the correct settings?

Re: Vesper watchmate 850

The display says that the anchor is bearing 193 deg from the boat and the pic seems to agree with that, so no problem there IMO. If y ou are worried that the boat appears to be pointed away from the anchor, well, if you don't have a heading sensor the instrument has no idea which way the boat is pointing. I expect it defaults to showing it pointing due north (as shown here) or perhaps defaults to the GPS course over ground which is pretty random when not moving significantly.

This does not affect the usefulness of the alarm.

Jim, do you or is there a recommendation of a heading sensor for the Vesper watchmate 850?

Sorry, no I don't have a clue about that. I just put up with the random heading from the GPS on my Vesper Vision anchor alarm.

Ok, yeh I've been doing the same, sitting here at anchor in a bit of a blow I got bored and started fiddling.

Re: Vesper watchmate 850

We have same unit.

There is no heading sensor.

The display indicates you are north of the anchor.

The bearing is the True (not magnetic) compass bearing to your anchor (you have the choice to set it to magnetic bearing, allowing you to glance at your compass to determine direction to your anchor).

The fact that your boat is "pointing away" from the anchor indicates it has recently moved (actually, is moving) away from the anchor.

It's just that it looks like the anchor is behind us as indicated by the display when I know the anchor is front of us, I've changed all settings to magnetic as far as I can tell.

From your screenshot, you have it set to TRUE, not magnetic.

Unit display does not indicate whether you are "in front" vs "behind" anchor. It indicates the bearing to anchor and shows boat location on a compass relative to anchor, plotted north up. On your screen shot, you are north of anchor. That's not necessarily "behind" the anchor.

The Watchmate Anchor Watch never changes its display orientation: it is always "north up".

The screenshot also suggests you had a ~180° wind (or current) shift that moved your boat.

Ok thanks for clearing that up for me, I have since changed the settings to magnetic & yes we did have a shift of wind against tide.
