News to me, but I have an old (2008) AIS which exports GPS. Is it possibly a change with the updated SOTDMA spec? I don't see what the rationale would be but then again it is government...

As I understand it class B ais must have its own gps and can’t share that data with external devices.

I know a raymarine firmware upgrade in 2013 disabled the gps output on the seatalkng

I am certain that having its own GPS is a requirement of the standard, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to not share it. But who said standards need to make sense?

I think the requirements got changed around 2013.

I would suggest that any AIS these days should be of the transponder variety. The real benefits only become apparent when ships can see your AIS beacon
