Re: VHF/UHF HAM Recommendation

Buy a used Iridium phone on EBay and a few prepaid sims that you can top up with credit when you plan a trip.

The high-end Kenwood radio does have GPS built-in, but it's pricy.
Correct - the 710GA has a built-in GPS. It's a seriously complex unit though - I played with one in the store. It pushes my gadget buttons, but on a boat I'd go for a simpler unit.

Good luck with the extra! I just got mine a few weeks ago, bought an HF rig and got on the air (W6GAJ). 20 meters is super active out this way.

Ic718. Great radio. I use ours for voice marine and ssb nets as well as email. The email is indispensable offshore for airmail weather files on demand

Ic718 is a HF unit, right?

Re: VHF/UHF HAM Recommendation

It is a HF unit and requires proper lic. to be used for ham bands and if modified for marine use requires a marine lic. as well.
