Dunno about the Med, Nikki. But in general, places that supply WiFi are closing it down for security, so you need to ask for access. "Open" wifi hubs have always been a security risk, folks are just getting more serious about that. That applies to USING one as well.

WiFi range will depend on your equipment and theirs, and all you can do about that is get more robust equipment. There are threads about the best ways to do that.

I've had the same experience as Monte - buy a local sim or a dongle to make a local network. Data is cheap, and we have been mostly in range in Italy (including Sardinia) Greece, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia.
