Which tillerpilot

I was looking at Tillerpilots, simrad and raymarine seem to be the choices.

I would imagine I will be looking at the raymarine 2000 or simrad 32 given the size of boats I am looking at?

Which way would you go?

Re: Which tillerpilot

We used a Raymarine ST 2000 on La Petite (1975 Ericson 23-II) while putting about 1000 NM/year on her for 3-4 years. We had absolutely no problems with Otto (the tireless tillerpilot) during that time and he got to work a lot !

With that said, on Senta II we are going Simrad for the electronics.

Re: Which tillerpilot

James, we have the ST2000 on a 31 foot yacht. It just works, however, be aware that water can get inside from the shaft seal and then the problems start. I keep looking at e bay hoping to find a spare one cheap, but they always go for near the new price.

No experience of the Simrad or if they are any more water resistant.

Re: Which tillerpilot

We had the Raymarine ST2000 on our Bristol 27. We loved it. It was trivial to set up and seemed to work much better than the ST4000 Mark II on our subsequent Tartan 34.

I am trying to decide which one to go with raymarine or simrad. Did you have any thoughts on this ?

Thanks

We use a Simrad. The decision driver was the many complaints we heard and found for the Raymarine product. Honestly, I'm sure a similar number of horror stories could have been found for Simrad as well. Ours works, and hasn't given us any problems. That's enough for me. Your mileage may very though.

Re: Which tillerpilot

We had an ST1000 that came with our 2500kg boat. West Marine was having a sale and we went with ST1000+ after the old one failed. I am guessing the old one had to be 15-20 years old.

Happy with the new one but I was looking at the ST2000 at the time.
