Wireless VHF RAM?

Can anyone offer their experience with wireless remote mikes for VHF radios?

Uniden maybe the only one out?
Uniden | A World Without Wires - WHAM

I have just intalled a new steering pedestal and am considering a RAM mike but would love to not have to drill holes and run wires. I dont have much experience with Uniden gear though.

Thanks,

Re: Wireless VHF RAM?

Some of the early runs had a disconcerting delay such that the first word would often get cut off but that problem has been rectified. I find it a great convenience to be able to walk anywhere on board and still be able to hear/talk on the wireless mic. If you are prone to losing glasses, cell phones, etc... overboard, the same fate awaits but a little common sense goes a long way.
After using it on my boat, many of my friends have converted to a wireless WAM mic now.

SV Escape Plan
I have the Uniden UM625C with WHAMx4 remote.
Use it anywhere on the boat or take with you in the dink.
Works nicely and is a no brainer to install

The WHAMx4 wireless remote mimics all the features of the base unit anywhere on the boat and up to ½ mile away.

Re: Wireless VHF RAM?

I have two of the Whamx4 mikes and find they work great. It really cuts down on yelling during anchoring. I haven't tried it from the dinghy but it works great from the marina laundry room

It's possible that Uniden has discontinued them. The major retailers are all out of stock. It's a shame. You definitely want the Whamx4 not the original Wham which was not 2.4ghz

I sent an email to Uniden CS, asking if they were discontinued. You are right that they seem to be unavailable. Even Amazon is out of stock...

Re: Wireless VHF RAM?

I love my Whamx4, evan though the battery life is not impressive. I hope they're not permanently unavailable as I was planning on adding a second unit and some spare batteries.

Re: Wireless VHF RAM?

I think the batteries are fairly standard and used for other devices. You should be able to get them off Ebay. At worst, you might need to re-solder the connector.

Having two is very handy. It also gives you two charging cradles. I mounted one at the nav station and one in the cockpit. I leave them "charging". It's on the same circuit as the nav equipment breaker (I added an inline fuse).

This fixes two problems. They're always charged and I have a good guess as to where I left it.

Re: Wireless VHF RAM?

Agreed. The batteries are not a big problem. Easy to re-work if the OEM units become unavailable. The one RAM we have is used at the helm but the cradle is mounted in the aft cabin within reach of the bunk. Ideally we'd like to have two units and three cradles. The extra cradle would be mounted at the helm, but we would still have two below so both could stay charged. Since the battery only lasts a few hours off the cradle, we now have waterproof handheld VHFs for use in the dink and on shore. Our newest one has DSC and GPS - very handy.

They are always in short supply this time of the year.

Re: Wireless VHF RAM?

I have one and don't like it b/c the battery life isn't that great. otherwise it is a very nice unit. Having a cradle handy at the steering station would make a big difference I have my cradle in the cabin and b/c of that it runs out of charge and then takes a long time to re-charge. Final Answer -- great piece of kit except that it needs to be kept on the charger when not in use.
