Re: Xmas AIS issues

Back upstairs because that vessel is on the move.
Now showing up on AIS again

Do you perhaps have software settings to suppress anchored or moored targets being displayed?
Not that I am aware of.
If you look at the list in the first post there are several moored vessels there

Quote:
Do you have a different antenna you can connect, even a little rubber ducky (while you wait for the new antenna)?
Nope.
Just have to sit and wait for the US inefficiencies sort themselves out.
Ordered Antenna from US and AIS from China on same day.
China gets here a few days ago with 3 checkpoint on tracking.
US is still on its way doing a tour of every stop and a million hands.......

Re: Xmas AIS issues

Also class B transmit dynamic data at as long as a 3 minute wait if not moving. The static data is every 6 mins. Not all data packets are received by design. So miss a few packets from an anchored boat and you may have to wait 10 or 12 mins for it to show up.

Re: Xmas AIS issues

I'd go with transmission or (distant second) GPS antenna issue. Sounds like you're only picking up the strongest signals at the point of reception. See if ProAIS2 works for your unit - it's readily downloadable via the Internet -which is used on many models to set the MMSI (You have set the MMSI, right?). It's got enough diagnostic functions to pinpoint most issues.

Re: Xmas AIS issues

Hi, Simi 60,

The guy who disappeared after anchoring may simply turn off his AIS transmission at anchor. Maybe uses a phone app for anchor alarm instead of his AIS.

In the USA, most AIS AtoN signals are sent from N-AIS base stations. These stations are co-located with RESCUE21 installations. Transmitted signals from these stations are easily received at ranges of 25-miles or more. The AIS AtoN signals may be transmitted from more than one base station.

Reception of an AIS AtoN signal indicates only that your receiver is hearing the nearest RESCUE21 N-AIS co-located tower. I routinely receive AIS AtoN data for locations more than 80-miles away using an indoor antenna 20-miles inland. The direct path to those AIS AtoN locations would be more than 80-miles of all-terrain, an impossibly long distance for direct reception.

The whole concept of AIS (Apart from govt tracking our movements) is to see boats that are close so as to avoid collision right?
I agree with Ann (JPA Cate) on this; that vessel may have turned off the AIS.

If I am at dock, I turn off my AIS. I'm not moving and if another boat collides with me it's certainly not because I didn't have AIS turned on.

(IMHO AIS is great for coastal and offshore cruisers. But, for inland waters, and weekend boaters it is mostly noise.)

Sounds interesting.

It's possible to update MT without sending out real AIS VHF pings, though. What boat was it?
