Can you identify what type of boat this is?

Hello,

First post here, been lurking for a while. If this isn't the right place for this I apologize. I'm hoping someone out there can help me identify the make and model for a boat. It is for sale locally very cheap, and I've been looking for a project. So I'm trying to figure out if she would be a decent sail boat once if I fixed her up.

Unfortunately I don't have any other photos or more information to go on. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,
Barret

Welcome aboard Barret!
I cannot identify the boat, but I still find it very interesting. Aluminum, I am guessing? Or is it glass covered plywood? I'd definitely be curious to get a closer look at it. I am guessing you are in Australia or NZ? At any rate looks like she could be a pretty fast coastal cruiser with standing headroom in the salon/ galley?

Hey Don,

Thanks for looking. I'm in Sweden actually, so opposite end of the world from NZ/Australia. Maybe that will help some identify this boat.

Thanks,
Barret

Barret, I'm only guessing, but it looks a bit like some Van de Stadts that I have seen in the past. Might have a look at their website and see if anything matches up.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the tip. With some quick searching I can see the similarities with the Van de Stadts. I haven't found a match yet, but I'll look more thoroughly later.

Thank you,
Barret

Re: Can you identify what type of boat this is?

Yes, I can identify this boat!
It is Hydra, very popular in Russia design for self boatbuilding. The author of this design is Kurt Reinke from Germany.
The boats of this type were built in many places in the USSR, Germany, the USA. The design is enough old - the book with the drawings was published in the USSR in 1981, the yacht itself was designed in 1971 or 1972.
The boat has two variants of construction - steel or aluminum (very fast). In 1975, the aluminum Hydra went for 24 hours 225 NM. The maximum speed under the spinnaker was 14 knots.
Here is site (Germany language) with Kurt Reinke designs: REINKE TYPYACHT - KONSTRUKTION
Here are the drawings (Russian language) Hydra from the book (upper boat): Курт Рейнке, Гидра и Омега, моторно-парусная яхта длиной 15,5 м, Постройка яхт, как построить яхту своими силами, чертежи яхт, полезные советы, инструменты и материалы для постройки яхт
I have many friends who own Hydra (or have build them), so you can ask me about some details.

Sincerely yours,
Artur

Re: Can you identify what type of boat this is?

1) How long is this boat "on deck"?
2) Could the Pilot House be a later custom addition?
3) How many ports are in the side ? Are some ports smaller than others?
Look at the Morgan Out Island series-- with similar ports in the top of the hull.

I'm thinking it looks like a Reinke design. A German metal boat designer popular with the DIY's in Europe in the 80's

Re: Can you identify what type of boat this is?

Howdy Barrett! Welcome Aboard CF!

Since the boat is in Scandinavia, I would suspect a boat from a European designer. In this case, the hull design makes me think of the German designer Kurt Reinke.

Note, the portlights on the hull may be different due to available items or possibly due to builder/owner preference. Some Reinke boats are 'home built" or "custom" boats built in GRP or Steel or Aluminum, so variations in some details could exist in different boats, including hard dodgers, portlights, hatches, etc.

Here is a link to his website (it is in English and German).

REINKE TYPYACHT - KONSTRUKTION

Excerpt:
"Kurt Reinke, author of books about yacht- building and for many years working as a co-ordinator of the building of professional Mega- yachts on a world-famous yard, developed beside yacht design for private self builders. From the originally smaller boats a self's building system of well- proven ocean- going-yachts was developed with a type yacht program of 7,5 to 20.0 m length in the course of the years. "

Re: Can you identify what type of boat this is?

Yes. But it is unlikely a Reinke. I have seen boats like this home in Sweden and one in Germany but I cannot recall the name.

If the boat is locally then what stops you from walking up to the owner and asking about the design?

Re: Can you identify what type of boat this is?

That wooden mast not protected from rain and sun - can be shot. We do not store boats like this or else they end up looking like the poor thing in the image.

If I recall now well, the boat I have seen in Germany was plywood. Identical or a copy.

In the same price bracket I would look for something like a Triss Magnum, IF, Laurin or similar: less maintenance, grp/alloy and safer in skerry gardens.

TRISS MAGNUM sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

If you like the dog house, it is bang simple to retrofit a plywood one into a Triss.

If you want to sail further out one day, look at IFs, Marieholms, Laurins, Storfidras, Allegros, Amigos - all available locally at a very reasonable cost.

Cheers,
b.

The ports made me think that but I thought the Out Islanders were full keeled?

Looks a lot like a "LA krydser". A danish boat built of GRP covered plywood. Designed in 1958 by Bjшrn Olsen. You can still find them sailing around danish waters.
The last built #190 can be seen here; la krydser

Re: Can you identify what type of boat this is?

No neither LA Krydser (LA are round, have full keel and no windows in the tumble home (whaledeck) portion. And not Morgan. I am very sorry I lost the name. It is either Scandinavian (Swedish maybe Danish) or maybe (less likely) German.

An intensive search at blocket, udkik, scnboat etc. will return the name. Or send an email to Knape or any other broker and they will know.

Cheers,
b.
