The previous owner of my first cruising boat said to me:

" A boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money"

It didn't take long to know exactly what he was talking about.

Turn off the water to the head before you leave the room.

BOAT, Break Out Another Thousand

It's more of a definition but funny none the less.

During a discussion about who was the stand-on vessel:

"It doesn't matter who's right, it's who's left that matters."

Never aproach the dock faster than you're willing to hit it.

3am is a lousy time to be playing anchor, anchor, who'se got the anchor.

Told to me by a friend after their 32 foot aluminum ketch dragged its anchor in some caribean mooring, causing them to back down on a reef and bending the rudder n skeg.

I've always kept that to heart, with only one exception. So guess what? I went aground. Doh!

Red Right Return has always stayed in my mind.... I learned to sail on small boats in the Panama Canal where keeping track of the shipping channel is a constant and critical job, not just for entering and leaving the harbour...

The first thing I was ever taught about boating -

Never stand up in a small boat underway.
