Gelcoat over paint?

I bought a boat that has been painted white over the gelcoat. Many spots just flicked off completely (paint and gelcoat. I filled the holes and would lke to apply gelcoat. Will it stick to the painted areas? Do i need to sand them down till the gelcoat? Im not aure what kind ofpaint it is.
Whats the best way to makesure the gelcoat sticks? (Without stripping)

I think you will have to sand the paint off.

To obtain the best result follow the manufacturers directions for the product you choose.

Re: Gelcoat over paint?

You would need a tie coat such as Awlgrip 545 primer. The painted surface would need to satisfy a solvent test. Not sure why you want to use gelcoat if the final finish is going to be paint. You could fair over the repair areas with gelcoat then sand it back to the point where there is no gelcoat overlapping the paint (assuming that you properly feathered the repair area to start with). More details and some photos will get you better advice.

Re: Gelcoat over paint?

Why use gelcoat? It won’t stick to paint for long. If you’re doing a decent job of fairing (you would need to either way to get a decent finish), you can get really nice results from most two-part paints. And it is way easier than what your contemplating.

Most new cars are painted with 2-part paints, don’t see too many with sketchy finishes.
