Importing diesel engine from India

I am looking at a Yanmar 3JH engine with low hours from India. Has anyone tried this? Are there import fees or taxes? If I did this, I would hire a customs agent.

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

If it turns up with a snapped crank shaft what are you going to do about it?

I take it your looking at ex lifeboat type engines. How about this, bit closer and better consumer protection:

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

At the moment, I am interested what the import financials would be.

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

You probably know this already, but some of those lifeboat engines have really deep sumps and will struggle to fit in some engine bays.

Does it meet US emissions requirements?

You can get diesel outboards in other countries but they can't import them because they don't meet emissions requirements.

+1 on the emission certification.

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

I was thinking about the emissions problem. Also I think by the time I paid customs, import fees, tariffs, agents and so on, it would be a better idea to buy within the U.S.

Mercury, Cox, Oxe, all sell diesel outboards in the US. Very very pricey.

For the quick and dirty, check out Form 3520-21 and see what fits for the engine you are considering.

For way more information than you ever wanted to know on the subject, here are several EPA links (assuming an import to the USA based on your profile location):

Engine Import Overview

Importing Vehicles and Engines

Compression-Ignition Off-Road Engine Regs

Thanx for that.

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

Bought a D2-50F Volvo Penta with MS 25 transmission through a web site called Apollo Duck in England. This directed me to Marine engines direct Ltd and an individual named Sean Blackstone. The complete package delivered to the marina was $10,200. That includes taxes, fees, boat ride from England and delivery from pier to marina. Now the downside. The box was partially opened and 3 of the 4 motor mounts were missing. The transmission was strapped down next to the engine and had rubbed on the fan belt. Mr. Blackstone was no where to be found. I bought the replacement mounts from parts4engines.com. Finally an email from Mr. Blackstone. He says send me the invoice from parts4engines and it will be reimbursed. Well 2+ years later and zero response to multiple emails and phone messages and no money. It gets worse. Volvo Penta USA wants nothing to do with me or my engine. The installation manual is not included with the new engine. Only a Volvo Penta tech can access the web site to download the installation manual. There is no Volvo Penta national tech support. Finally Volvo customer service USA gets a dealer to come out and inspect the engine to begin the warrantee. This individual is kind enough to download the installation manual for me. I have some correction to do on my installation. Dealing with Volvo Penta is just about impossible. Giving out any tech information by Volvo Penta is treated the same as giving military intelligence to the enemy. The engine itself is really sweet running. If I had to do it again I would have gone with a Beta engine. This is just my experience in buying an overseas engine.

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

I gave up on Volvo diesels 20 years ago.

I have decided to give engines outside the U.S. a pass. Too risky. When I asked the seller of import costs and such, he became vague. Once he has the money and the unit sits at the port, it's on me.
Thanx everyone.

You'd have to pay duty, at least, generally around 6%(?), and state taxes.

What's the web site for the place in India? They break up a lot of ships there.

I think you have made the correct decision, mate.

Re: Importing diesel engine from India

Yup...but it was worth kicking around. There is a slight chance that I might be picking up a project that is under powered but a good boat otherwise. I thought of buying a core 4-108, 4jh or 3jh and rebuild, which I'm no stranger to. Then I saw this one and thought..."hmmm?" Although I posted here, I asked around and received some chilling factors that were mentioned here and other places.

I was in the import business for a few years importing teak furniture from Asia. The worst part of that was U.S. customs.
