Saw this photo on FB and just had to share it here for CF members to enjoy too.

What would you call this type of rigging?

Re: Odd, Old, Obscure or Mysterious Nautical Things and Boats

Wood Freeman autopilots with the flat top compass were very common on shrimp boats when I was coming up in the world. The back and forth grinding and clunking used to put me to sleep if I wasn't careful. They were dependable if you changed the motor brushes regularly but sometimes it would "wind up" on you, and if you disengaged it with your arm where a wheel spoke could hit it, it could fracture a bone or at the least leave a very painful bruise. Don't ask me how I know.

The Mystery?

Why is one boat in an achorage or marina struck by lightning, when another nearby boat may have a taller mast?

This photo is used merely to illustrate a sailboat struck by lightning.

I've seen lightning strike the ground right between several multi storey buildings.

WOW! I just saw this today. Amazing!

Thanks for adding it to this discussion.

Deep Divers (Old School) deserve respect for the primitive equipment they had to use to survive on the sea floor.
