I think Admiralty are finishing paper charts in 2026

Would be great if opencpn could meet all the (at least software) requirement of ECDIS by then !

I think that's a great question, especially for users of coded vessels. (Although I think most could make do with the Mini-ECDIS spec)

There is no reason that any interested party takes OpenCPN and some defined bundled hardware and homologates it as an ECDIS. Expensive process.
From the software or functional side there are very few items missing. The most important perhaps, a "route checker".


OpenCPN is listed by the IHO as an ECS using S-63 charts

What is the "Mini-ECDIS" spec, please?

In the UK, commercial vessels are coded by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The UK Sea Fishing representatives got a clause added to the coding requirements that vessels under 24m could use mini-ECDIS - to reduce cost and complexity.


It's a subset of the ECDIS spec published at: https://www.mini-ecdis.org.uk/Mini_ECDIS_Final_v1.1.pdf


Even a system close to mini-ECDIS would probably be useful.

Not really unless someone is going to build dedicated hardware to IEC standards specified in the mini ECDIS this is most certainly not your average laptop !!

No point really. The leisure market doesn’t need certification and the commercial needs specialised platforms.
