Airmar p79 to iPad running open cpn

The title of the thread says it all. I’m wondering you can interface these to things through some kind of hub? Is it possible to translate Airmar data into something open cpn can read?

OpenCPN running on an iPad? P79 or P79S? Perhaps the title doesn't say it all?

A P79 is just a transducer you need to feed it signal and read the response which is what a depth gauge does. So unless you i/f with an instrument I would say no !

OpenCPN doesn't work on an iPad, so there is that.

The P79 seems to be NMEA2000 compatible. If your boat has a NMEA2000 bus already to plug that into, then you could also add a gateway such as the YDWG-02 and that would make the depth (and everything else on the NMEA2000 bus) available to OpenCPN.

The P79s is the NMEA2000 version ... the P79 is analog.

Re: Airmar p79 to iPad running open cpn

beside tablet vs iPad, the other question was P79 vs P79S. If P79 then you need to identify the display/controller to which the P79 is connected. If P79S then it is both NMEA0183 and NMEA2000 compatible.

If all you want to connect to OpenCPN is the P79S then the Yakbitz NMEA WiFi bridge would be the easiest/cheapest approach. Connect power to the P79S and the bridge, connect the NMEA 0183 between the two. Turn it all on. Connect the tablet to the Yakbitz WiFi network, Bob's your uncle.

There are a lot of other ways to do the same thing, but if it is truly a single instrument you want on a simple network then that is how I would do it without breaking the bank or making anything complicated.

This is awesome and totally the answer I was looking for even though I didn’t know how to ask it correctly. I need a NMEA/Wi-Fi bridge and I need to see what model the Airmar is. Many thanks.
