AIS target tracking problem

First of all, thank you everyone who are working on the development of the OpenCPN! I have used the software for a couple of years now and it is great to see how it is moving and developing!

I mainly use the sw when racing offshore and also when cruising.
The AIS tracking feature is great to use on the race course.
However, when racing the Round Gotland race a month ago, there is constantly about 100 targets to track, it seems the data accumulated for all the targets make the sw slower and slower.
I would suggest that AIS tracking has a possibility to select targets to be tracked, like a "my fleet option" or something similar.

Anyone experienced the same problem?

HenrikB...

We have not had any reports that a large number of AIS targets causes noticeable slowing of OpenCPN.

In your experience, what part/functions of OpenCPN become slower with high AIS target count?

Thanks
Dave

Re: AIS target tracking problem

I am tracking up to 100 targets at a time and did not notice any slow down (Intel Atom netbook).

HOWEVER perhaps the issue crops up when you use tracking over a longer period (logs).

Re: AIS target tracking problem

Hello Dave and thanks for quick response!

the zoom/pan function became very slow, after a couple of hours, the program terminated itself, I do not recall the error message. It happened repeatedly, after a couple of hours every time.
When not tracing AIS targets I have not had the problem.

Best regards,
/Henrik

It occurred after a couple of hours.
When keeping track of competitors on a race course offshore, it is very useful to see at least 3-4 hours

Henrik....

I forgot to ask, which OS, and which version of OpenCPN, please?

Thanks

Re: AIS target tracking problem

OpenCPN is the latest (3.2.2), Windows 7 on the computer (need to go to the boat to get more details if needed).

Where would it be appropriate to put the request for some kind of "my fleet" functionality on the AIS-tracking?

Best regards,
/Henrik

Re: AIS target tracking problem

Henrik,

does "tracking" mean that there are a plenty of CPA graphs open? Or just observing the AIS targets?

In the latter case with 100+ objects we did not observe any problem with responsiveness (W7, 3.2.2, Dell ATG).

Hubert

The problem occurs when activating the function to see the trace from all the AIS targets.
I did not use CPA graphs or other data.

Re: AIS target tracking problem

I thought the maximum tracking time was 60 minutes, which I use all the time.

I have just switched to 120 minutes to test... but I would handle a slowness if I could track for 2 hours. That would be sensational.

If you are tracking for 300 minutes 5 HOURS thats a very long time! No wonder your computer is slowing. Why do you need to track for 5 hours?

It is great to be able to track competitors on the race course when sailing offshore, it is extremely valuable information.

I would like to be able to select a few ones that I track for a longer time rather than to have the whole screen filled with 100 traces...

Also, saving some tracks would be a great feature, but that might be able to do with the NMEA data recorder...
