AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

I have an SR162 AIS receiver connected to my laptop via an RS232-USB conversion cable, running under Vista Basic.

Starting OCPN,the AIS targets starts to appear, yellow at first and later green when the second message is received.

After an hour or so,all AIS targets disappear for some reason, never to reappear as new messages arrives. Looks like OCPN,having received a target ONCE,ignores it the second time.

Ideas anyone?

Here you can see the continuous datastream from my SR162 receiver.

Re: AIS TARGETS DISAPPEARS AFTER A LONGER PERIOD

Another problem is that the 'Show AIS/NMEA window' under the GPS tab does not function.

I have tried setting the GPS area to 'Sharing port with AIS',None or port 5
but nothing works? I am running v. 2.5.

Re: AIS TARGETS DISAPPEARS AFTER A LONGER PERIOD

In comparison, view the same targets in Fugawi ENC Marine which constantly renews the messages from my SR 162 AIS receiver....

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

Strange nobody reacts to this potentially dangerous error in OCPN.
ALL your AIS targets will DISAPPEAR after about one hour, and OCPN will have to be restarted to start collecting the NMEA signals again. v. 2.5.

Also very strange why it is not possible to view the AIS NMEA signals coming in,setting the 'Show GPS/NMEA data stream window' box in the GPS section.
Does not matter if you set GPS to none,COM:5 or sharing AIS.

Today,I took the plunge, and upgraded to v. 2.6 xxxxx and I will check if the same error occurs.

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

I fear v. 2.6 1310 has the same fault, after 30 min ALL targets dead or alive DISAPPEARS!

Not good in a foggy situation in heavy shipping traffick.
After 30 min. the targets disappear and you think there is no traffick...
SERIOUS ERROR IN OCPN!!

Still not possible to view the AIS NMEA signals coming in,setting the 'Show GPS/NMEA data stream window' box in the GPS section.
Does not matter if you set GPS to none,COM:5 or sharing AIS.

I am using Vista Basic version and latest OCPN v. 2.6 1310 build 2012-1-10

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

Tore...
Last week I've sailed 200 miles in the northern Adriatic running 2.6.1310 and have seen no such problem with the AIS targets during those almost 2 days of nonstop operation...
Is there something in the log? I agree this would be a serious error, IF there's such an error.

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

Pavel..

I have the same problem with both the previous stable version as well as v 2.6 xxx.

The fact that this error NEVER occurs using Fugawi ENC Marine, or indeed the 'AIS Dispatcher' showing VERY detailed NMEA information received from my SR162,surely proves something is not right with OCPN?

If you say you are receiving continuous AIS information over, say several hours, then perhaps this is an Vista anomaly? See my previous inputs for screendumps proving my point.

I am situated half way between Rio and the busy seaport of Santos and ALWAYS have a lot of traffick here.

The log file is too large for upload acceptance here,so I list the relevant detail of the log:

Pavel..

From the log it seems OCPN is unable to find the plugin libraries: Error: Failed to load shared library 'D:\PROGRAM FILES\OpenCPN\plugins/gecomapi_pi.dll' and so on for ALL the plugin files?? Please see attached dump of my 'D:\PROGRAM FILES\OpenCPN\plugins/ directory.

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

Pavel..

Another problem...
The 'AIS target query' aborts OCPN several times, having to restart...
See no report of this in the log.. See abort page attached..

Trying to list the NMEA data inn the data stream window under GPS
only shows this strange message and no more. (Sharing AIS port)

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

Pavel..

45 minutes ago I had all green AIS targets on my screen, now they have all gone as per attachment. Re booting OCPN,immediately started the build up of AIS targets, starting in yellow.

What also concerns me is the seemingly random abortion of OCPN whenever you queery an AIS target.

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

This may be a problem similar to the one which makes OpenCPN lose the GPS signal after a period of time. All I know about that problem is that it happens with USB/serial converters in Windows 7, does not happen to other charting programs, and does not happen with the same equipment in Windows XP.

My best guess is the reason no one else is complaining is that no one else is running Vista Basic.

According to SR162 documentation ( AIS Receiver Troubleshooting ) the "strange message" is the diagnostic message issued when SR162 initializes itself. Looks like SR162 resets itself and freezes there ... I had this all this year with an easyTRX2 Class B transponder, using both OpenCPN/XP and SailCruiser/W7 software (via Prolific i/f to W7 and direct USB to XP) - it just hanged every couple of hours. I noticed it before the AIS targets would disappear, because the GPS position was lost as well... Never solved this - I just restarted and carried on. Looks very much the same.

Re: AIS Targets Disappear After a Longer Period

Pjotr..

I hear what you say, but,NONE of the NMEA messages ever comes through the GPS/NMEA datastream window in the GPS section. This was the only one..

Secondly,I could understand your theory if it wasn't for the fact that the message flow is CONTINUOUS when using Fugawi ENC Marine and also a perfect, continuous flow when connecting to the AIS Dispatcher from Astra Paging. It never stops, and all the time using my RS232-USB converting cable.

Perhaps NMEA signals received through a USB COM port needs a different interpretation by OCPN to be continuously read rather than just one time?

If this is something peculiar to Vista Basic,OCPN users based on this browser should be warned. Personally I don't think so as the NMEA flows freely in many other programs.
